Minibar

by Laura Neilson

Most of us associate the term "mini-bar" with hotel room fridges harboring overpriced soft drinks, booze and snacks, but in Amsterdam, it's a decidedly unusual addition to the city's nightlife. Minibar, the recently-opened drinking spot in the Dutch city's center, operates by allowing customers to serve themselves from the bar's series of variously-sized beverage coolers.

After checking in with a staff member (passport or driver's license required), patrons receive an ice bucket and a key to one of 45 self-serve bars lining the length of the space. Potable options include beer, champagne and mixed spirits (and yes, snack items too).

The bar's interior, designed by Concrete (the architecture firm responsible for the Netherlands' award-winning Citizen M hotels), exudes a chic industrial aesthetic that showcases the various offerings available behind gleaming glass doors.

Minibar's novel setup is an upscale revival of the automat concept that combines the convenience and instant gratification of helping oneself, along with the social benefits of a lively public atmosphere. It's definitely a sleek example of thinking outside the "bar."

Plaztik Mag x Factory Fresh: Boxed In

A prime example of the way global economic anxieties are already showing up in art is the group show "Boxed In," the latest presented by Plaztik Mag and Factory Fresh, in which artists created their cardboard dream home.

Alison Corrie, best known for her gorgeous design work and delicate collages, built a beautiful gyspy caravan, inspired by those she saw on her travels in Southern France. Artist Morgan Sheasby, created a miniature version of a log cabin, based on a design for a real log cabin he plans on building in upstate NY one day. While made out of cardboard, the structure is a testament to his architectural craft. Noah Sparkes took full advantage of the challenge with his vagrant interpretation of Buckminister Fuller’s geodesic dome, complete with Astroturf and internal lighting.

A cardboard bodega from Skewville offers bargain goods for sale, while CiscoNYC amazes people with a beautifully crafted, cardboard robot living among a cityscape.

While hopefully not a reality for most artists as we continue to trudge through the down season, the show is noteworthy in its interpretation of making the most out of nothing during hard times, resulting in a beautiful collection of work that challenges both the medium of cardboard and how we inhabit our own spaces.

WYWH Patternscapes Launched!

This exciting and much anticipated series of 8 new art prints has explored landscapes in a more graphic, pattern-like style than ever before. These 'patternscapes' have come together over several months and within the series there is sure to be a new adventure for everyone!

Currently, Wish You Were Here is a wonderful collection of 25 eye-popping, optimistic and inspiring A3+ art prints. By the end of April 2009 WYWH will be launching the much anticipated super range of 100% cotton drill, 46cm x 46cm cushions in 3 patternscape designs! Alongside the cushions there will also be available a superb range of 9 high-colour, high-quality fabrics also derived from the patternscapes.

WYWH is an exciting venture created by UK based husband and wife team, Fiona and Ben O'Brien (aka Ben the Illustrator). Ben is the illustrator extraordinaire and Fiona, with her background in Advertising and a penchant for ideas, design and interiors, conceptualises and manages their business and products. Together they create illustrations for commissioned advertising campaigns, editorial, interiors and of course their own art prints and products under the brand 'Wish You Were Here!'.

The concept behind "Wish You Were Here" was to create a brand of illustrated functional items that the house proud, design conscious could enjoy in their home "We wanted a way for people to enjoy the optimism and vibrancy of Ben's illustrations in the comfort of their own home, and better still be able to use the items everyday!. Our aim is to produce beautifully conceived prints and products that retain our eco and humanitarian ethics, envelope them in Ben’s awe-inspiring, colourful illustrations creating the perfect combination of function and beauty".

"We understand that times are a little more difficult out there at the moment so we wanted to create uplifting artwork that offered people affordable escapism from their everyday grind. In a time where expensive, luxury escapes are not as possible, the aim of WYWH is to bring those beautiful, far away, idyllic places directly to you, beautifying your home in the process!"

Apple Researching Carbon Fiber Composite Materials for Exterior Shells

This would be awesome.

A patent application from Apple filed in October 2007 and published today reveals that the company is researching the use of carbon fiber composites for use in the exterior shells of electronic devices. Specifically, the patent application relates to the use of a "scrim" layer on the exterior surface of the carbon fiber laminate allowing for an "improved cosmetic surface."

In the background for the application, Apple objects to the appearance of typical carbon fiber composite materials:

Despite the many benefits of carbon fiber composites, such composites are typically black and the carbon fibers are typically visible on the composite surface. In addition, the fibers (either as a unidirectional, woven, or nonwoven substrate) are typically variable in their construction and therefore are variable in their surface presentation. As a result, the resulting carbon fiber composite can have cosmetic imperfections that reduce the aesthetic appearance of the molded article formed therefrom. Further, carbon fiber composites, often being black, provide a narrow range of surface appearance to the molded article and therefore may give a "tired", unexciting look.

Apple's insistence on aesthetic designs has apparently led the company to focus efforts on improving the visual appeal of such carbon fiber composites, which hold significant appeal for notebook computer design due to their strength and light weight.

A rumor from November 2008 claimed that Apple was exploring the possibility of replacing the bottom case of the MacBook Air with a carbon fiber composite in order to shave approximately a quarter pound off of the machine's total weight.

Next iPhone to Easily Record, Edit and Share Movies?

Considering all the leaked evidence of video recording and editing in the iPhone 3.0 beta, it's not really a stretch to predict that the next iPhone will offer long-requested video features. Still, Businessweek's Peter Burrows confirms that to be the case based on a source familiar with Apple's plans for the next iPhone.

In fact, Burrows suggests that video recording won't simply be an afterthought but a major feature of the new iPhone.

Evidently, shooting video is as easy as it is with a Flip, the ingenious device made by Pure Digital (recently purchased by Cisco). Then there's an iMovie app that lets you quickly save the sections you want, right there on the phone itself. There may also be support for MMS, so the clips can be shared wirelessly with friends. And because of the iPhone's relatively large screen, your friends don’t have to schlep to your PC or their Facebook page to see that video of your kids or your safari. Just hand them your iPhone.

Burrows even suggests it could be as successful as Apple's late, yet dominating, entry into the MP3 market with the iPod. An easy to use video recording, editing and sharing iPhone could be a breakthrough usage for the device -- allowing people on a large scale to quickly record and share videos without bothering to connect to their computer.

For what it's worth, MacRumors has similarly heard that the next iPhone will support Video recording and YouTube sharing which has been supported by evidence found in the iPhone 3.0 beta.
