Frank Kozik on art as commerce, freedom of speech
In a 2007 interview [video here] with Frank Kozik in his San Francisco art studio, Sean Stewart — who runs the highly addictive blog Babylon Falling — talks with the iconic artist about art as commerce, freedom of speech, and perhaps most interestingly, his lucrative entry into the designer toy market. The opening quote sets the tone, and gives a crash course in Kozik’s philosophy:
“I don’t have a political problem with making money,” Kozik says in the opening minutes of the interview. “Because if you have money then you can do cool shit, right? That’s how it works.”
And in explaining how it works, Kozik goes on to underscore how his anti-establishment viewpoint has never been censored in the course of his career:
“I have been producing sexual, anti-authoritarian, psychotic, crazy, fascist, communist, anti-fascist, pro-church, anti-church… every kind of graphic art work and opinions in interviews and every media magazine source, millions of websites. I have just fucking talked shit out my fucking ass against everybody and for everybody for 25 years and nobody has ever tried to suppress me, or fuck with me, or tell me what to do. I love America. There’s no bones about it.”

Sony's PS3 Slim gets the ColorWare treatment
You know, sometimes it's just fun to go to ColorWare's site and see just how ugly we can make our favorite consumer electronics. It was while trying to find just the right shade of puce for that Cisco 7900 Series desk phone when someone pointed out that the company is now offering custom-colored Sony PS3 Slims. Color the logo, the top, the base, and up to four controllers. They'll sell you a console outright for $449, or send yours in and they'll ugly it up for $149 (controllers cost extra).

THE MOSQUITO BIKE
German Designers Tom Mudra and Hans-Tobias Schicktanz designed a new way to get around within the city – the Mosquito.
Words from the Designers:
“Our aim was to create a lightweight and attractive E- Bike suitable for urban places. The motor is powered by lithium batteries which cost about 50p to charge. The Mosquito has got a range of about 60 km (37 miles) with a maximum Speed of 50 km/h (31 miles)”

The Indie Rock Coloring Book
Already on a roll with their t-shirts that raise money for good causes, Yellow Bird Project's recently-launched whimsical Indie Rock Coloring Book offers kids, and the music fans that care for them, many pages of fun and games.
From the psychedelic cover of a hand drawing an explosion of instruments and swirls topped with a bird head to the 31 pages of coloring and games, the book tempts kids to start playing and even singing along. Each page features a drawing by U.K.-based musician and illustrator Andy J. Miller and celebrates some of indie rocks favorite bands. The first pages offer a chance to color in a Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! carnival and to find all of the birds in Devendra Banhart's beard.
Keep turning to find the faces of Rilo Kiley with instructions to draw in each band member's current hairstyle. For the Holly Throsby there is a word search with the lyrics to "Making a Fire". Miller also drew his impression of Andrew Bird whistling and a maze that challenges Broken Social Scene to reunite. As Matt Berninger from The National says, "This is the greatest coloring book since coloring was invented. I've decided to have kids just so I'll have somebody to give this book to."
The book raises money for several of the causes that Yellow Bird Project supports. As Rilo Kiley's Pierre de Reeder writes in the foreward the book is, "a great example of how you can turn your love for music and art into something that can really help."
