Nano Chromatic

Recently announced by Apple, the iPod Nano and Touch will be getting a bit of a make over while the classic gets cut down to a 120GB only. Along with a larger curved glass screen and flurry of colors, the Nano gets a built-in accelerometer allowing it to automatically go into shuffle mode with a simple shake of the hand. Keeping much of its exterior in tact, Apple’s iPod Touch receives a slimmer stainless steel body with side button volume controls and built in Nike+ feature. Capping off the updates is a new version of iTunes and HD compatibility for TV Shows.

iControlPad

Got Jailbreak running on your iPhone? Emulators and games just not really working well enough with the touch screen? iControlPad didn't think so either - so we built this little add on. Yeah. Realise the full potential of the iPhone by adding real controls. Your iPhone just slides in and locks in to place via the serial port, there are no modifications needed and you can remove it at any time.

The iControlPad is already supported by some of the biggest iPhone devs (including ZodTTD - PSX, GBA emu etc.) and they are sending out units to several others.

Patent: Apple Details Multi-Touch Mac User Interface

An Apple patent application published Thursday rehashes some concepts and diagrams from 2006 patent but generates continued interest due to persistant rumors that Apple may release a multi-touch tablet Mac. AppleInsider details some of the techniques in accessing small user interface controls when using your fingers on a multi-touch tablet Mac:

Apple explains that on a tablet Mac, the buttons of a control box may be smaller than a users finger and located close together. Therefore it may be difficult for the user to make a selection directly without possibly pressing an undesirable button. To solve this problem, at least a portion of the control box would be enlarged, including the buttons therein when the user places their thumb over the control box.

Apple also details the use of swipe and scrolling to manipulate on screen lists as well as the implementation of a full screen multi-touch keyboard.

While we've heard rumors of a tablet Mac for years, this year we've heard claims that either a tablet or mini-tablet Mac could be coming soon.

New ipod Nano etc?

Digg.com's Kevin Rose has posted a new blog entry and YouTube video claiming to have knowledge of upcoming iPod updates with a significant number of details:

- Revamp of entire iPod line.
- Small cosmetic changes to Touch, Nano to see significant redesign (see above)
- iPods to see fairly large price drops to distance itself from the $199 iPhone.
- iPod touch 2.1 software, iPhone to get update very soon after.
- iTunes 8.0 ("it's a big update w/new features").
- All of this coming in the next 2-3 weeks.
- Blu-Ray support coming in Mac OS X 10.5.6

OpenClip.org Offers Copy and Paste for iPhone Across Apps

Many will remember Proximi's MagicPad [App Store] iPhone application which was the first to offer a 3rd party notepad application for the iPhone with copy and paste functionality. Of course, due to the constraints of the iPhone SDK, Promixi was only able to provide copy and paste functionality within their own application.

Promixi, however, took it a step further and proposed an interface for system-wide copy and paste on the iPhone. While Apple has acknowledged that iPhone copy and paste is in their plans, it has simply not been a high enough priority for them.

Student developer Zac White has since taken matters in his own hands and founded a non-profit, open source, community project called OpenClip which is offering iPhone developers a free Copy and Paste framework that will add this functionality to their applications. This will allow users to copy and paste data between supported applications.

OpenClip accomplishes this feat while still following the rules of Apple's SDK. iPhone applications are allowed to read from other application's files but only write to their own. By creating a standard location for each application's "clipboard", applications can "copy" by simply saving data locally and "paste" by pulling the most recently saved data across all applications.

A demonstration of the OpenClip is shown in GeekBrief.tv video with early versions of Twittelator [App Store], WordPress [App Store], and MagicPad [App Store].

First HTC Dream phone from Google

The high-end phone is expected to match many of the capabilities of Apple’s iPhone and other so-called smartphones that run software from Palm, Research in Motion, Microsoft and Nokia to access the Internet and perform computerlike functions. The HTC phone, which many gadget sites are calling the “dream,” will have a touch screen, like the iPhone. But the screen also slides out to expose a full five-row keyboard.

Jobs: $30 Million App Store Sales in First Month

In an interview with Steve Jobs, The Wall Street Journal reports that the iTunes App Store has delivered over 60 million programs to customers over the course of the first month. While most of those applications were free, Jobs does reveal that Apple has sold an average of $1 million a day in applications for a total of $30 million in sales over the first month. Jobs says he's "never seen anything like this in my career for software."

Some of the big winners amongst the sales include Sega's Super Monkey Ball [App Store] which saw over 300,000 downloads in the first 20 days. This represents over $2 million in net revenue for this $9.99 game alone. Meanwhile, the popular medical reference Epocrates [App Store] has seen over 125,000 downloads during its short time in the App Store. This compares quite favorably to Epocrates previously installed base of 500,000 other mobile users.

Also addressed is the recent discussion surrounding application removals. An Apple spokesperson described the pulling of the I am Rich application as a "judgement call".

Finally, Jobs confirms the ability to remotely disable an application:

"Hopefully we never have to pull that lever, but we would be irresponsible not to have a lever like that to pull"

New Macbook Sneak Peek?!?

We're eagerly awaiting Apple’s next-generation laptops, and if these spy shots are genuine, we’ve just been given a sneak peek at them!

They purport to show the back of the new laptop’s lid, and the screen housing (without the LCD screen in place.

Falling into line with recent rumours, the new design is made out of aluminium, and looks very smooth indeed, if a little chubbier than we’d imagined.

What’s notable, is that the shell clearly carries the name “MacBook” rather than MacBook Air or MacBook Pro, falling in line with predictions of all-new aluminium notebooks that’ll match the Air and Pro models, but without the high price of the latter, or featherlight frame of the former.

There’s no sign of the rest of the body, however, so we’ve no idea if rumours of Apple’s plan to include glass trackpads is true.
