New ipod Nano etc?
Digg.com's Kevin Rose has posted a new blog entry and YouTube video claiming to have knowledge of upcoming iPod updates with a significant number of details:
- Revamp of entire iPod line.
- Small cosmetic changes to Touch, Nano to see significant redesign (see above)
- iPods to see fairly large price drops to distance itself from the $199 iPhone.
- iPod touch 2.1 software, iPhone to get update very soon after.
- iTunes 8.0 ("it's a big update w/new features").
- All of this coming in the next 2-3 weeks.
- Blu-Ray support coming in Mac OS X 10.5.6

Mickey Mouse: Public domain???
The LA Times rounds up the epic story of how the original Mickey Mouse may just not be “copyright Disney” anymore:
All signs pointed to a Hollywood ending with Disney and Mickey Mouse living happily ever after — at least until a grumpy former employee looked closely at fine print long forgotten in company archives.Film credits from the 1920s revealed imprecision in copyright claims that some experts say could invalidate Disney’s long-held copyright, though a Disney lawyer dismissed that idea as “frivolous.”
Although studio executives are not yet hurling themselves from the parapets of Sleeping Beauty’s castle, the unexpected discovery raises an intriguing question: Is it possible that Mickey Mouse now belongs to the world — and that his likeness is usable by anybody for anything?
As the story explains, Disney owns the trademark on the more recent evolution of the Mouse, but the earlier versions are in public domain–despite Congress constantly passing copyright extensions for just this very reason — so copyright is a bit hazy.

Revealed: the art Damien Hirst failed to sell
The Art Newspaper has this weekend disclosed the extent of unsold inventory, over 200 works, that are held at Damien Hirst’s gallery in London, White Cube, run by Jay Jopling. The article illuminates a situation for the artist, one of the most successful in the world, but also one of the most prolific, in which his traditional market may be less able to absorb the works at the pace at which he is aiming to produce them. This evolving landscape has presumably led Hirst to explore, through the landmark and controversial upcoming September 15th Sotheby’s London sale, new sales portals and new pools of buyers. The Art Newspaper disclosure however, could perhaps have some ramifications for the Sotheby’s sale itself, as sophisticated buyers may take into account this newly exposed trove of similar work to that being auctioned, and simple supply and demand economics might as a result negatively affect pricing.

Doc Von Block by Scott Tolleson
This one is a very limited (qty. 25) piece. He’s called “Doc Von Block” by Scott Tolleson
He measures 6″ in height and comes with his sidekick beaker “Ivan”. He looks like he’s made of wood but is actually made of solid resin. Due to the process of making these, each piece will have a unique quality. No two toys will look alike.
The piece went for roughly $125 each. What didn't sell at the SDCC will be for sell at a future show at Red Hot Robot in Phoenix, AZ in August.

Jeff Koons "Guilty"
Art superstar Jeff Koons has landed another hit, and designed his first yacht. The"Guilty", owned by art collector Dakis Joannou, features an extravagant artistic take by the US artist on the exterior.
"Of course, Sarah Morris' text painting "Guilty" hangs on the wall of one bedroom - bought after the yacht was named. Owner and major art collector Dakis Joannou simply had to have it!
The exterior design was created by international art star Jeff Koons, famous for his basketball in perspex case, three-storey high "Puppy" made of flowers, and the "Made in Heaven" erotic series of photographs with Italian ex-wife and porn-star-member-of-parliament La Cicciolina.
Although the blown up print and poster colours will be familiar to art fans from Roy Liechtenstein's signature Ben-Day Dots style, Jeff Koons actually based this design on a WW1 camouflage pattern." Via Monacoeye.

The Monofin
Biomimetic pioneer Ted Ciamillo has come up with a revoluntionary monofin that promises to propel a person completely out of the ocean. The 42-inch dolphin-tail look-alike, dubbed the Lunocet, uses winglike hydrofoils—the same technology that keeps an airplane aloft—to help propel swimmers through the water at nearly ten miles per hour. That's theoretically fast enough for a strong swimmer to mimic a dolphin's breach. Ciamillo plans to debut his invention this April in the Florida Keys, where he and his two-man crew hope to become the first swimmers to get completely airborne. $1,250–$1,800; lunocet.com
